In 2012, annual surveys began to locate and monitor tortoise habitats. It was found that the tortoise population numbers were depleting due to the abundance of shrubs growing in their environment. The shrubs were negatively affecting the climate and making the surrounding ground uninhabitable for the gopher tortoises. A medium threat of potential extinction hovers over Pinellas County's gopher tortoises.
